Class Ten

This week class started at 5 pm due to having the lecture with the official chief photographer for the former governor of Maryland, Martin O'Malley. In class Dr. Chris talked about what to do and not to do when you are filming outside. He told us that when you are getting an exterior shot that we have to make sure not to get the sun in the shot and sometimes you may have to use reflectors to do so. It was very insightful for when we go out to shoot in the future to know these tips. After class finished we went to the lecture. Jay Baker, who was the photographer speaking, was very interesting. He spoke about how he started taking photographs in college and how he shot for the newspaper at his school. Than he talked about his work in advertising and taking shots for different magazines. Afterwords he spoke about shooting different members of the government. It was so interesting how he had taken a picture of President Obama before he was president and was just the senator of Illinois. He had no idea that the senator he took the picture of was going to be the future president. Mr. Baker also had many other shots of Obama when he did become president. After he showed us pictures of Governor O'Malley, who he was the chief photographer of him. His pictures were truly phenomenal and it was really funny how much he loves shooting with the fish eye lens. I am really glad we had to go to this lecture because it was very insightful.
Here are some pictures I took while there:

Midterm

List the 3 parts of the production process
  • Pre-production
  • Production
  • Post production
Describes what happens in pre-production, production, and post production
  • In pre-production the writing of the script, developing of a concept, and the storyboarding takes place.
  • In production the filming or taping of it , posting on your blog, and your visual reflection takes place.
  • In post production you make finishing touches on what you shot. You can fix photos, add sound, or cut parts that you have filmed.
So far which part of the production process is your favorite. Think for a moment

  • My favorite part of the production process is production because I like going out to shoot. I feel like getting all of your concepts together, in pre production, is the hardest part so once that is all organized it’s nice to go out and film what you came up with.

Your blog represents the entire production process. Which part of your blog is part of the pre-production process, which part of your blog represents the production process and which part of your blog represents post production?
  • Pre-production: the writing and organizing of what I want to put on my blog; also deciding what kind of pictures I want to either add on to my blog or go out and shoot.
  • Production: when I go out and shoot the pictures I want to put on my blog and also when I film myself talking about what happened in class previously.
  • Post production: when I am making finishing touches on the photos I shot, the post that I wrote, and listening to what I said in my video post and reshooting it if I want to add something or did not like the way the original was.
Take photos of yourself doing your blog and show yourself engaging in pre-production, production, and post production. Yes, your group can assist you.

What are the three examples of lighting?
  • Fill lighting: lighting from the side
  • Key lighting: lighting from the front
  • Back lighting: lighting from the back

What is the first and golden rule of lighting interior scenes?
  • TURN OFF THE LIGHTS!!

Post three pictures that illustrate the different lighting.
 Fill lighting
 Key lighting
Back lighting

Yes, there is a golden rule exterior/outdoor shooting too, and if you know it I will give you extra credit.
  • The golden rule is to make sure you know where the sun is and do not shoot directly into it. You want to use it as a source of lighting for whatever you are shooting.
Tell me a story. Give an example, using your pictures, of visual story telling by story boarding. A good story should have a beginning a middle and an end. Post your photos as a story.

Then for the second part of this answer your group needs to take your photos to YouTube and post them and use music provided by the program. Go to YouTube. In fact I expect someone who knows this to post it on the board since this is open book and many have you have already done this already. Yes, I will give extra credit to the person or the group who posts this already, and limited trial immunity for yourself and your group.

Give examples of the different shot compositions that we learned in class and post them on your blog and provide the link on the page. You must list the shots you use.
  • The different types of shots are establishing shots, long shots, interior shots, exterior shots, double shots, close ups, extreme close ups, and mediums

I WANT THE LAST TWO QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN WRITTEN FORM AND ON VIDEO!
  1. Explain the importance of distance in pictures and videos and why it is important in forming relationships. Why do you think I make you write blogs, create photo shoots, and demonstrations and post them constantly?
    • Distance in pictures and videos tells a lot about the relationship between the people on screen. If there is a lot of space between the people on screen that tells the viewer that they are either not very familiar with each other or just do not have a close relationship. The closer the people are standing to each other, the closer or more established of a relationship between the two of them, the viewer depicts.
    • I think you make us write blogs, create photo shoots, and demonstrations and post them constantly because you want us to have experience in the field of Communications. Also with our blogs and photo shoots, we have pieces for maybe potential employers to look out when we are applying for a position. Also when we are in the field, working it is going to be constant so posting constantly is preparing us for that.
  2. What do you think you have taken away from this class so far? Describe your favorite project so far. What do think of using Edutainment & Convergence as a hands on learning tool instead of a traditional book? Evaluate your group and how you have grown working together. Evaluate the direction of the class and how you have grown. Evaluate me as a professor and whether or not you are legitimately grasping the material, and some suggestions of things you would like to do before April 10th.
    • This is my first Communications class at Loyola so I have l learned more about the major in general than I knew before. This class is definitely pushing me more towards being a Communications major because currently I am Undecided. My favorite project so far was going out to shoot during the snow day. Even though it was freezing, it was nice to have an excuse to really have fun in the snow and it pushed my friends to come outside with me. It also showed me that even when the weather is bad, you are always on the job and will have to report no matter the weather. I really like using Edutainment & Convergence as a hands on learning instead of a traditional book because it keeps the class more actively involved. If we were going strictly by the book people would lose interest and might zone out but because it's hands on we have to constantly be on our toes and active listeners. Also we have a chance to voice our opinions more since we do not strictly use a book. I really like my group. At first I was a little intimidated by them because they are upperclassmen but they are all really nice and listen to everyone's opinion when we are working on group projects. Since we know each other a little better now, the projects and ideas flow a little better now. Even though the class is going at a faster speed and we are ahead of schedule, I feel like it works. I definitely feel like I have grown more during this class because now I know a lot more about Communications and whenever I watch movies, music videos, or TV shows, I can hear the little voice in my head saying sometimes what the different shots are. I think Dr. Chris is a great teacher. He brings this energy to the classroom that no teacher I have had before has brought. He makes us happier to be there and even though it is a class, he makes it enjoyable. Since he will repeat a lot of the key concepts we should know, every class, it makes those concepts really stick out in our brains so we can recite them too when he brings them up again. Something I want to do before April 10th is go to maybe a set of something filming and see the different parts of production and lighting in person for an actual show.
